Love Environment’s Evolution into Producer Responsibility Consulting and Senior Level Recruiting…

I have been working (and volunteering) in the environment sector now for over 50 years, starting as a community outreach worker with Pollution Probe in Eastern Ontario in 1973. After a stint in Ottawa with the just-created Renewables Resources Branch, I joined the Is 5 Foundation that operated the East York (Toronto) curbside recycling pilot in 1981 then moved into consulting with its ‘sister’ organization Resource Integration Systems to support the launch of Kitchener’s pilot Blue Box program in 1983 and eventually to participate in the expansion of province-wide curbside recycling (that’s now to be fully producer funded). For me, that was the beginning producers becoming more responsible for the waste they generate (and/or the carbon they emit). This “simple idea” has been a driving force in my professional and volunteer career (and I’m still at it!).

One of the other joys of my work life has been mentoring and collaborating with people wanting to make an impact on their environment and in their communities. So, in 2008, I created my own company Love Environment Inc. to continue with the Extended Producer Responsibility consulting work that I love but also joined up with Ann Tavares (CEO of HR Logic) and James Sbrolla (Chair of Environmental Business Consultants) to create a new specialized business service through HR logic: executive search for senior managers in the Energy, Clean Tech, Sustainability and Environmental industry sectors.

HR Logic and Love Environment piloted a unique and specialized "boutique" recruitment service. We all still worked in our respective fields of expertise (clean tech, HR, environmental business, social entrepreneurship and extended producer responsibility) but we also collaborated on senior level environmental recruitment projects. Our early placements included:

Stewardship Ontario

Director Strategic Supply Chain – HR Logic's first recruitment project was to find a Director of Materials Management for Stewardship Ontario, Ontario's first Industry Funding Organization created through the Waste Diversion Act.

Emterra

Vice-President of Ontario Operations – Emterra is a Canadian leader in providing integrated waste diversion and recycling solutions; the VP Operations for Ontario was responsible for the overall management and development of Emterra's waste collection and material recovery services.

Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA)

Director of Policy. This position was responsible for policy development, program leadership, and project management as well as supporting internal committees, caucus action plans and supporting external communications.

Progressive Waste

Director, Recycling and Material Diversion. This was a North America wide position and was filled by one of Canada's most experienced and best-known municipal government waste management service leaders

The first CEO for E-Tracks, a new Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) for tire stewards in Ontario.

Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA)

Vice-President of Sustainability – The VP Sustainability was a new position with responsibility for leading CPIA's advocacy and programs to increase the recovery of plastics through planning, program management, financial management.

Electronic Product Stewardship Canada (EPSC)

Research Associate – Three times EPSC retained HR Logic to hire a research associate to support the work of EPSC's President and Board of Directors.

Waste Diversion Ontario

Geoff and his partners at HR Logic also placed six professional staff with WDO by 2016 including:

  • Director of Oversight and Operations;

  • Director of Communications;

  • Manager of Policy and Planning; and

  • Internal, External and Social Media Communications Specialists

Based on this successful collaboration, Geoff decided to “go it alone” in 2018. I had moved to Stratford, wanted to manage my work flow more carefully and wanted to be able to expand to recruiting “beyond waste”. Love Environment continues to provide EPR project consulting support (on a selective basis) but has become more focused on recruitment projects because of the increase in demand for support. LE continues with same basic concept – targeting strictly mid to senior level environmental recruitment. Some of the successful recruitment projects for Love Environment include :

Canadian Stewardship Services Alliance (CSSA) and Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC)

Director of Operations – Love Environment was retained by CSSA/MMBC to lead the search for their first Director of Operations to oversee the operational implementation of the BC printed paper and packaging stewardship plan.

Reclay/StewardEdge Inc

Vice President of Consulting. RSE is one of Canada's foremost Producer Responsibility consulting and business service organizations, with operations in Ontario and Manitoba and affiliate offices in Europe and the US.

Toronto Atmospheric Fund (TAF)

Geoff supported TAF in finding their first Vice President of Strategy and Partnerships; TAF is one of Canada’s most respected municipal climate action leaders.

Paper and Paperboard Environmental Council (PPEC)

Geoff helped find a new General manager; PPEC has been the industry voice for the Canadian paper-based packaging industry for over 30 years.

Senior Staff for the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority

RPRA was created to serve as the new oversight agency for Ontario's move towards a regime of Individual Producer Responsibility (IPR). Love Environment has assisted RPRA in hiring three key positions since 2019: Manager of Programs and Planning; Compliance Manager for Reporting Systems and a Compliance Manager for Inspections.

Senior Staff for Reverse Logistics Group

RLG is a global company with a new Ontario office that builds and operates reverse supply chains for its customers that optimizes recoverable material collection, processing and marketing. Since the spring of 2022, Love Environment has supported RLG with 3 new positions: Marketing Operations Coordinator; Producer Support Partner; and Marketing & Communications Specialist (with a 4th search currently underway).
